What Are The Research Benefits of Tesamorelin? Effects on Lipodystrophy: Saudia Arabia Research has shown promise in addressing the effects of lipodystrophy. Lipodystrophy causes an uneven distribution of body fat, leading to fat loss (lipoatrophy) in some areas and fat buildup (lipohypertrophy) in others. It is often associated with metabolic problems like insulin resistance and high cholesterol. Research has demonstrated that individuals with lipodystrophy tend to exhibit reduced growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) levels. Two phase III studies involving 806 participants highlighted it’s impact on lipid metabolism over a 26-week period, with a subsequent 26-week extension. Results indicated a 15.4% reduction in visceral adipose tissue and improved triglyceride and cholesterol levels among the peptide users compared to the placebo group (1).

Visceral Fat Reduction: Also known as visceral obesity, is a condition characterised by the accumulation of excess fat around internal organs. This type of fat is prevalent in individuals with lipodystrophy and is strongly associated with a range of metabolic complications, including insulin resistance, atherosclerosis, elevated LDL cholesterol levels, and hyperuricemia. It has been shown to have a significant impact on reducing visceral fat.

Saudia Arabia Clinical trials indicate that it can effectively decrease visceral adipose tissue by up to 25% in lipodystrophy models. This reduction in visceral fat not only supports a healthier metabolic profile but also contributes to mitigating the risks linked to related metabolic disorders, further emphasising its therapeutic potential (2).

Immunodeficient Fat Fractions: A study examined the effects of the peptide on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in HIV-positive individuals. Over 12 months, 61 participants with high hepatic fat fraction (HFF) received either Tesamorelin or a placebo. Results showed 35% of peptide-treated participants had a significant HFF reduction, compared to only 4% in the placebo group, with no impact on glucose levels (3).

Insulin Sensitivity: A 12-week randomized trial studied the effects of the peptide on insulin sensitivity in 53 participants with Type II diabetes. Participants were divided into three groups, receiving either a high or low dose of the peptide or a placebo. Measurements of fasting glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin, and diabetes control showed no significant improvements across all groups (4).

Another study examined its effects on GH secretion and insulin sensitivity in 13 healthy men. Two weeks of treatment increased GH and IGF-I levels without affecting fasting glucose or insulin sensitivity, suggesting enhanced GH secretion without metabolic impairment (5).

Effects on Muscle Tissue: A study evaluated the peptide’s effects on muscle tissue using CT scans. Results suggested that it may improve muscle density and volume, particularly in the rectus abdominis, psoas major, and paraspinal muscles. These changes included increased density, size, or reduced fat, with significant differences compared to a placebo group (6).

Cognition: A clinical study investigated it’s effect on neurological functioning in 100 immunodeficient participants with mild cognitive impairment, aged 40+. The trial involved daily peptide treatment for 6 months, a 6-month break, and another 6 months of treatment. Neurocognitive performance is being measured using the Global Deficit Score (GDS) at 6 and 12 months. Final results are pending publication (7).
