For those of you folks in the Midwest, on the East Coast, or in other areas of coldness, we have seen your forecast and feel for you! I myself, am originally from the U.P. of Michigan and am an expert on snowbanks, shovels, freezing temps and that seemingly endless wait for the Spring thaw! I can tell you that down here in Scottsdale, Arizona...Spring has a totally different feel. In the valley of the sun, Spring simply means slightly warmer temperatures (80’s) are on the way and we can finally break out our shorts! And it also means that it’s Spring Training Time...
For those of us that live in Arizona, we look forward to MLB’s annual visit to the valley of the sun called the Cactus League. That’s right folks, Spring Training is now upon us!!! We love this time of year and have loaded up our Grayhawk Golf Shop & Trading Co. with a line of cool, vintage, throwback baseball apparel to celebrate! Make sure to stop by before everything is gone...see pic above! I have already purchased my gear and can’t wait to get to my first game. Here is a link to the 2012 Cactus League schedule so get out there and enjoy that crack of the bat, cold beer and hot dog out in the warm Arizona sun!
Wherever you call home, we hope you enjoy your Spring as much as we do!
Until next time,
Colin

Good tidings! Okay...I don’t really know what that means. I’ve heard it in carols and such. I guess it is a fancy way of saying good news or best wishes or some such thing. At least that’s how I’m going to use it.
Anyway, in case you haven’t noticed the Holidays...Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza, Festivus (The aluminum pole has a very high strength to weight ratio for you Seinfeld fans)...are right on top of us. For those of you yearning for a little Holiday Cheer, I wanted to share a few quick pics that I have taken around Grayhawk this Holiday Season...

The Grayhawk Tree
Just Your Average Grayhawk December Morning
The Feisty Grayhawk Reindeer
Have a Safe and Happy Holiday Season and Good Tidings!

What the Heck is Overseeding?
Posted in Golf, tagged Arizona, Bermuda Grass, Colin Oas, Dormant, Ernie Pock, Grayhawk Golf Club, Overseed, Overseeding, Rye Grass, Scottsdale on September 12, 2011| 1 Comment »
It’s that time of year again...OVERSEEDING! What the heck is an overseed and why do we do it here at Grayhawk Golf Club? To put it in layman’s terms, the hot weather summertime Bermuda Grass goes “dormant” or turns yellow in cooler weather. We like to have nice green grass year round here at Grayhawk, so we go through the process of OVERSEEDING to make sure this is the case.
Here is a quick overview of the OVERSEED PROCESS...Grayhawk Style.
THE SCALP – The scalping process is basically a really short mow of the existing summer Bermuda Grass. A buzz-cut if you will. Our super Super Ernie Pock and his staff simply lower the mowers to a height of about 1/2 an inch and mow away. THE VACUUM – Literally! THE PRE-PLANT FERTILIZER – This is an insider tip from Ernie for all you homeowners out there. Once you have scalped and vacuumed, throw down a little fertilizer as a base which will aid in the germination of the Rye Grass. Smart guy that Ernie! In the inner sanctum of the Maintenance Building, this process is respectfully referred to as “CHICKEN %*#&” referring to the organic nature of the fertilizer used:) THE SEEDING – Pretty straight forward on this one as well. The guys use big machines to spread the seed evenly across the intended areas. In those tough to reach corners and bumps, they seed by hand and always mark with paint, where they have been! In overseeding (as in life) it’s always important to know where you are going and to remember where you have been. THE WATER – Lots of water. From the time the first seed is dropped THROUGH the first week, you need to water every 1.5 hours for 3 to 4 minutes from daylight until dark. Once the seed has germinated and established, you should reduce the frequency of watering while increasing the watering time which will allow for deeper watering. Ernie says this makes for deeper, stronger roots that will carry you through the season. THE MOW – The first mow typically takes place 9 days after the seed has been thrown...amazing I know! I definitely helps us that Ernie is the best around!
We have 2 great golf courses here at Grayhawk...Talon and Raptor. Our Talon Course will be closed from Sept. 19 through Oct. 2 and our Raptor Course will be closed from Oct. 3 through Oct. 16. We look forward to another great winter season here with GREAT COURSE CONDITIONS. Hope to see you at the ‘Hawk!
Until next time-

We will also be giving away 2 for 1 Green Fees at Grayhawk in all of our Members Club tents throughout the week so make sure to check out the tables for the 2 for 1 cards or track me down for a handful. I am the tallish, very goofy looking, odd-haired guy wearing the backpack and Grayhawk apparel! Attention all Grayhawkers looking for great deals on warm food and cold drinks. This blog will be short, quick, easy, painless and to the point.
We now have a Happy Hour here at Grayhawk! We know...we know...it’s about time. Here at Grayhawk, we get a lot of “I love your place but wish you would do this”...We often listen, often tweak your suggestions, and often take credit for your great ideas. You asked for a Happy Hour...you got it my friends!
We call it our “EMERGENCY ROUND” (as in “Yo bartender...you the man! Can we have another round of them happy hour Grande Margaritas?”) and it runs daily from 3:30pm-6:30pm. Stop over and try a prime rib slider or 7 and wash away that double bogey on 18 with a cold $3 draft (draught if you are fancy) beer! I like to think it CURES WHAT AILS YOU.
Here is a link to our EMERGENCY ROUND menu...enjoy!
Until next time,
Colin

The man, the myth, the legend...Grayhawk Boot!
Posted in Golf, tagged Blue Moon, Colin Oas, Grayhawk Boot, Grayhawk Golf Club, Grayhawk Golf Shop & Trading Company, Paul Bodine, PGA Championship on August 24, 2010| 2 Comments »
I caught up with my old pal Grayhawk Boot a few weeks back and told him I wanted to do a quick blog on him. Being that he is a fairly big deal around here at Grayhawk, we tend to keep his whereabouts private and keep him sheltered from the general public. Grayhawk Boot is a very private boot and initially hesitated on my blog as he has never liked the spotlight. I managed to convince him that I was simply going to follow him around for a few days to see what I could come up with. Here is a behind the scenes look at the man, the myth, the legend...Grayhawk Boot! I like to tell folks that Chuck Norris wears Grayhawk Boot pajamas...
Special thanks to our pal Grayhawk Boot...YOU THE BOOT! I also need to thank Grayhawk Boot’s boss Paul Bodine for letting him have a few paid days off so we could get our blog done. (Paul doesn’t know this yet but we put all the beers on his tab...so THANKS AGAIN PAUL!)
Until next time,
Colin

Cliff Cell Phone Pic
The Masters is my favorite golf tournament of the year. The annual stroll down Magnolia Lane, the Butler Cabin, Amen Corner, the pimento and cheese sandwiches, the courteous patrons, the Sunday roars, the blooming azaleas, and how can anyone forget the famous crackling Masters Theme Song. Total awesome-ness!
Our Outside Service Director here at Grayhawk, Cliff Coffelt is lucky enough to be attending this year’s Masters tournament so I wanted to pass along some of his observations from Augusta. AND if anyone is actually at Augusta and sees Cliff, tell him he owes me $20...
Cliff-isms from the 2010 Masters Tournament
“Man this place is hilly...TV doesn’t do the elevation changes any justice!”
“Pimento and cheese sandwiches are cheap and tasty!”
“I’m pretty sure I am allergic to azaleas!”
“The $2 beers are great but small. They come in tiny plastic cups...”
“I think Bones gave me a thumbs up after Phil’s birdie on #8!”
“They even rake the pine straw at this place!”
Thanks again Cliff...and for those of you stuck in the sunny 80 degree heat with me here in Scottsdale, stop by Phil’s Grill this weekend to check out the 2010 Masters coverage! We have high def, comfy seats and cold drinks. Fair warning though, if Phil is near the lead come Sunday, you better get over to Grayhawk cause it will be ROWDY! AND as always, if Phil wins, he buys everyone in Phil’s Grill a beer!!!
Until next time,
Colin

Aim for the green stuff!
Please drive your carts in the fairways here at Grayhawk Golf Club! Yet another reason to hit straight drives...You are only allowed to drive your carts in the fairways here at Grayhawk until further notice! You heard it right...ONLY IN THE FAIRWAYS PLEASE. No more of this cart path only stuff. Here is the low down on the recently adopted cart rule here at Grayhawk:
With our 2009 overseed, we chose to have a cool contrast of lush green Rye grass fairways with dormant yellowed Bermuda roughs. (See cool pic and remember to aim for the green stuff!) The native Bermuda grass is the key to our year round, great playing conditions here at Grayhawk. Even in the dormant winter months, it is important to keep a watchful eye on the Bermuda. This particular winter season, with both Rye and Bermuda grasses prevalent and exposed, cart traffic can damage the dormant Bermuda causing problems throughout the rest of the year.
This winter season, we are asking that when exiting the cart path to your golf ball, please simply DRIVE STRAIGHT OUT TO THE FAIRWAY and stay in the fairway as needed the length of the hole. When nearing the green, simply DRIVE STRAIGHT BACK TO THE CART PATH and proceed up to the green as usual.
Happy Holidays and Hit ‘Em Straight!
Until next time,
Colin
