What is a Peptide?

A peptide is just a short chain of amino acids, usually between 2 and 50 joined together.

They can act as:

Hormones (sending signals between organs) Neurotransmitters (sending signals between neurons) Growth factors Immune regulators Repair or anti-inflammatory agents

So “peptide” describes its structure, not its function.

Peptides that influence growth hormone (GH) pathways have exploded in popularity in longevity, recovery, and body-composition circles. Two of the most talked-about are CJC-1295 and Ipamorelin, often used together as a “stack.”

They’re marketed as a way to support your body’s own GH pulse rather than replacing GH directly. But the science, safety, and regulatory reality are more nuanced than most internet summaries suggest.

What actually counts as a hormone?

A hormone is any molecule - peptide, steroid, or otherwise — that:

Is released by an endocrine gland (like the pituitary, pancreas, or thyroid), Travels through the bloodstream, and Signals another tissue to act.

Some hormones happen to be peptides (like insulin or growth hormone). Others are steroids (like testosterone, estrogen, cortisol) or amines (like adrenaline or melatonin).

The GH-IGF-1 Axis

This is the system in your body that controls growth, repair, metabolism, and body composition.

Your hypothalamus releases GHRH (Growth Hormone–Releasing Hormone). Your pituitary gland responds by releasing Growth Hormone (GH) in pulse. This pulse peak within the first 1–2 hours of deep sleep. GH travels through the bloodstream and signals the liver (and other tissues) to produce IGF-1 (Insulin-Like Growth Factor-1). IGF-1 drives most of the downstream benefits:

Lean muscle growth Fat metabolism Tissue repair Cell regeneration Better sleep and recovery

The efficiency and effectiveness of this system declines as we age as well as in the setting of augmented stress, increased inflammation, low sleep quality/quantity, and poor diet

How CJC-1295 + Ipamorelin Enhance This Axis

CJC-1295 (GHRH Analog)

Mimics your body’s natural GHRH. Increases the amplitude and duration of GH pulse. Encourages a more natural, physiologic rise in GH. Reducing constant overstimulation.

Ipamorelin (GHRP Analog)

Stimulates ghrelin receptors that trigger GH release from the pituitary. Provides stronger, more reliable GH pulses without raising cortisol, prolactin, or hunger (unlike older compounds like GHRP-6).

CJC increases the size of each GH pulse. Ipamorelin increases the frequency and strength of the pulse. You can think of CJC-1295 as the spark and Ipamorelin as the fuel.

These two combined;

Increase GH + IGF-1 levels gently and physiologically Support lean muscle growth Improve fat metabolism Enhance recovery, sleep quality, and cell repair Avoid the downsides of synthetic HGH (which can blunt your natural production) No serious adverse events in short trials

Side Effects

Because they increase GH/IGF-1 signaling, potential side effects overlap with GH elevation generally:

water retention / mild edema tingling or numbness (carpal-tunnel-like symptoms) increased appetite in some users (more with GHS class, less with ipamorelin than older GHRPs) headaches or flushing fatigue during early adaptation possible insulin resistance at higher/continuous exposure

Regulatory Status

Neither CJC-1295 nor ipamorelin is FDA-approved as a medication for anti-aging, body composition, or recovery. They are often sold as “research use only,” and the FDA has flagged Ipamorelin (and other peptides) as presenting safety risks when compounded without sufficient evidence.

If someone is considering these compounds, medical oversight and legitimate compounding standards (503A/503B) matter a lot, because purity, sterility, and accurate dosing are the difference between a therapy and a gamble.

CJC-1295 and Ipamorelin increases GH amplitude + frequency together

CJC → more GH amplitude Ipamorelin → more GH frequency

That combination supports hypertrophy extremely well, especially when combined with resistance training. Growth hormone works by repeated pulse, not constant levels.
